You will never achieve righteousness until you donate some of what you cherish. And whatever you give is certainly well known to Allah.

MSA 2024 Fundraising Appeal

Assalamu Alaikum Respected Students and Alumni/Community Members,

During the 2023/2024 academic year, the Muslim Students' Association at the University of Alberta has been working hard to provide high-quality events for Muslim and non-Muslim students on campus. This winter semester, by the will of Allah, we will continue to deliver events focused on both da'wah and establishing brotherhood & sisterhood between Muslim students on campus, creating a strong and united community.

Alhamdulillah, over the past eight months alone, we are thankful that together we have been able to raise well over $25,000 for various humanitarian appeals. This includes relief for Palestine, Afghanistan, Morocco, and Libya, as well as raising funds for Eid gifts for orphans and vulnerable children. With the new year approaching, we have various exciting projects just around the corner, including our annual Islamic Awareness Week. To make these events possible, for the first time this academic year, we are launching an appeal to help raise funds for the MSA itself.

We are seeking 120 generous community members to donate a one-time $125 by January 25th, to help us reach our goal of $15,000.
You can donate
here, or you can e-transfer us at msa@ualberta.ca!

Below, you can find the details for the initiatives we have planned this semester to better understand how the MSA will be using these funds.

Islam Awareness Week

Islam Awareness Week (IAW) is one of the MSA's largest and most costly initiatives. IAW is a week-long initiative dedicated to conveying the true message of Islam and its relevance to humanity in today's contemporary context to both non-Muslims and Muslims alike.

We hope to invite hundreds of students, faculty, staff and people from all walks of life to learn about Islam's universal and timeless message. This year we have planned da'wah booths, try-on hijab booths, public Quran recitations, lectures, speaker panels, a dinner, and more.

Costs for this initiative include venue booking, advertisements, speaker flight tickets, accommodations, honorariums, and dawah materials, amongst other expenses.

Jumu'ah

In the past, we have been charged approximately $3000-$4000 to book gymnasiums that can accommodate the 500+ students and staff that attend our weekly Jumu'ah prayers on campus.

This year, we have not requested donations for Jumu'ah as we are in the process of advocating for the University to cover the cost. We have yet to be charged for Jumu'ah bookings this year, and we are optimistic that the University will cover the bookings, insha'Allah.

However, there are other costs associated with Jumu'ah, such as the purchase of new speakers, new carpets, and carpet cleanings.

Seerah Competition

Back and better than ever, the MSA's annual Seerah competition is an initiative that aims to encourage students to study the life of the most perfect man to walk the earth, the beloved of Allah, who was sent as a mercy to mankind (may Allah's peace and mercy be upon him) and compete in a trivia-style competition against other seekers of knowledge.

Costs for the Seerah competition includebuzzer systems and prizes for winners and attendees.

Dawah Initiatives

The MSA is one of the only organizations in Edmonton that consistentnly executes weekly Dawah booths year-round. We seek to improve conveying the message of Islam to non-Muslims by training da'ees and making our tables more interactive through hijab try-on booths and prizes!

Regular Costs

Throughout the semester, the MSA regularly hosts free events with little to no budget. To better engage the community on campus, some of these events have small costs (i.e. equipment, supplies, prizes, and free food for attendees).

Some events/initiatives this year include:

  • Weekly Halaqas (at least one on each weekday)
  • M'Orientation
  • Dinners
  • Outdoor Jumu'ah
  • Islamic Book Club
  • Project Downtown (packaging & distributing care packages for those in need)
  • Quran Buddies
  • Hijab Booths
  • Jumu'ah Charity Fundraisers
  • Seminars & Workshops
  • Games Night Events
  • Mental Health Workshops & Events

Al' Baqarah 2:265

And the example of those who donate their wealth, seeking Allah’s pleasure and believing the reward is certain, is that of a garden on a fertile hill: when heavy rain falls, it yields up twice its normal produce. If no heavy rain falls, a drizzle is sufficient. And Allah is All-Seeing of what you do.
